What we learned about shopify and SprTags: a working setup

Battle-tested patterns for Shopify stores wiring up server-side tagging. Includes the trade-offs we hit along the way.

Shopify's tagging story has improved a lot in the last two years, and it pairs well with sGTM if you set it up with intent.

The short version: a Shopify store whose marketing reports match its order reports is mostly a matter of doing the obvious thing carefully. Use Shopify's checkout extensions to push canonical events into a server container, hash PII before forwarding, and reconcile against Shopify's own order data weekly.

You will work within Shopify's constraints rather than around them. That is the right trade. That trade-off is the one most teams underweight when they plan the work, and it is the one that quietly determines whether the project ships on time.

If you want a longer treatment, we have a deeper post in the series. For now, the takeaway is small enough to fit on a sticky note: Shopify and sGTM together are easier than they were a year ago. Take advantage.
